What Should I Get For The New Baby?

You would think that getting a gift for the new baby would be easy. After all it’s not like he has any favorite toys, or wants anything special, but still there is that question, what to get the new baby. The necessities were given to the expectant mother at the baby shower so what is left? What about getting the baby a personalized gift, such as: a diaper cover, plate, cup, sweater set, hat and bib, a story book or a blanket and more?

You might want to put together a layette. That’s a combination of things that a new baby needs, and of which there are never enough even if they were received at a baby shower. You can choose things for the baby now that is less generic and more personal, since you know the baby’s gender and its name. You can get things like body suits, convertible gowns, footies, socks or booties, hats, blankets robes bedding and anything else that a baby can use. In addition, throw in a rattle and a teething ring. Since you know the baby’s name you can have some of those items personalized. But if you are still not sure of what to get the baby, ask mom what it needs.

While you are buying that baby gift, don’t forget mom. After all, she did have something to do with baby being here. You can choose from all sorts of mommy jewelry. Any number of necklaces is available, including one called a dog tag which is a necklace that will hold baby’s picture in it. You can choose a birthstone bracelet which would have mommy’s, daddy’s, baby’s and other sibling’s stones on it. This is something that can be made into an heirloom and given to the baby when it is old enough to appreciate an heirloom.

Jewelry is not the only gift you can get for the mommy. She would appreciate getting personalized stationery on which to send announcements of the new arrival, or a personalized photo album to put the baby’s pictures in for all to see.  If mom is you sister or best friend then perhaps some personalized underwear would be appreciated.

Once you have decided what you want to get for mom and the new baby, buying the gift will not be difficult. However, keep in mind that babies grow very fast and what fits baby today may not fit tomorrow. So if you are planning to put a layette together, perhaps one for a baby three to six months old would be a better choice than one for a newborn.  A layette for an older baby will always be appreciated but more fully when mom goes to put something on baby that fit yesterday but not today. Baby’s never outwear their clothes they outgrow them and they are usually saved for the next baby. You can still get the same clothing and you can still personalize them, only they will be a little bigger.
