The Correct Premature Baby Clothes for NICU Babies

It is now possible to find premature baby clothes in high street stores and on websites, however not all premature baby clothes are suitable for every premature baby.  Your Baby’s size and medical condition will determine which type of premature clothing he or she will be able to wear.  The sizing of premature baby clothing varies from one manufacturer to another therefore it is important to check with each manufacturers size chart to ensure you purchase the right size for your premature baby.  Where possible check the location of any labels as depending where a labels is situated it could possible irritate your baby’s delicate skin.

Hats: Premature baby hats are essential for babies in the NICU, even the tiniest or very sick babies will benefit from wearing a hat as covering the baby’s head will help him or her stay warm.

Vests: Baby vests also known as bodysuits come in a variety of different styles.  When looking for a vest for a premature baby choose one specifically designed for use in the NICU.  The vest should open fully so that the baby can be placed onto the back panel of the vest enabling the front panels to be brought around the baby.  Choose a Velcro fastening rather than a stud fastening as the vest won’t have to be removed during any x-rays..

Sleepsuits: Premature baby sleepsuits or babygro’s as they are also known are available with long sleeves and feet and although these are wonderful for babies who have moved from a warm incubator to an open crib they are unsuitable for incubator babies. Sleepsuits that open out flat, and have side and front openings as well as short sleeves without feet are better suited to babies in an incubator sue to the medical leads that will be attached to baby.

Nappy covers: Even the smallest and sickest NICU babies can wear a colourful cover over their nappy. This tiny splash of colour will brighten up the rather sterile, stark MICU environment.

Socks: There is now a good selection of tiny socks suitable for premature babies and these too can add a welcome splash of colour.
